Fanlights & Window Frames

Fanlights are a logical development from the stairwell sash windows of the early Georgian Period. These decorative windows placed above the front door became more elaborate over time. Widely used in Britain & Ireland and in the United States, they often developed distinctive localised vernacular styles and are a unifying feature in many Georgian streetscapes. Where an original fanlight has been lost, its recreation provides a relatively low-cost nod to the original architectural intent.

PDM conserves original fan lights and manufactures fan lights to its clients’ design. If desired, we can assist in ensuring that an appropriate and authentic pattern is chosen.

PDM manufactures with a traditional steel backing frame, fronting the window with traditional lead  mouldings or worked copper or brass. We typically use broad glass.

The fanlight is delivered with a wooden two-inch outer frame, this enables those installing to pare back as necessary to ensure a good fit.
